Description
Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Seiryushi Kanetsugu 青龍子兼次 NBTHK HOZON TŌKEN Certificate
The first generation 仙台兼次 (Sendai Kanetsugu) was called 七兵衛兼次 (Shichibei Kanetsugu) and was a disciple of the second generation 安倫 (Yasuyoshi). He studied under 和泉守兼重 (Izumi no Kami Kaneshige) around the Kanbun and Enpō eras. His works are known for their various grain patterns and are well-regarded for their sharpness. The second generation, 次左衛門尉兼次 (Jizaemon no Jō Kanetsugu), studied under the fourth generation 国包 (Kunikane) and learned the 大和保昌伝 (Yamato Hōshō tradition). The lineage continued until the Meiji era, with the fifth generation 兼次 (Kanetsugu) also known as 盛龍子 (Seiryūshi), who was active as a craftsman for the Sendai Domain.
This sword is attributed to the fifth generation 青龍子兼次 (Seiryūshi Kanetsugu). It has a shallow curvature and a pronounced difference in width between the base and the tip, resembling the style of Kanbun Shintō swords. This shape was intended to enhance cutting power, and many works by this craftsman exhibit similar characteristics. The tang has been shortened and reshaped, and the steel features a masame-hada (straight grain) pattern, polished to a remarkable quality reminiscent of aligned sōmen noodles. The hamon is a suguha (straight) pattern with long sunagashi (sand lines) interwoven with the steel, displaying intricate activity along the blade's edge. The boshi is straight with a rounded tip.
The balance of the sword is excellent, with a center of gravity toward the hand, making it very easy to handle. It is a shame that the sword is unsigned and has been shortened, but it has no notable flaws and exhibits outstanding craftsmanship. A re-polish would further enhance its beauty and make it a treasured piece for many years to come.
Originally, the sword had a wooden habaki integrated with the hilt, which a connoisseur later replaced with a copper habaki. Given the high quality of this sword, we recommend getting a new habaki and Shirasaya Case made to fully appreciate it.
Bare weight: 776 grams.
