Description
Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Sue Bizen 末備前 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate
Among the swords known as Sue-Bizen from the late Muromachi period, there are many works signed with the name Sukesada, with notable smiths such as Yosaemonjo, Genbei no Jo, and Hikobei no Jo. During the Sengoku period, when there was a high demand for swords, many Bizen swords were forged for various battles. In the sword world, there is a derogatory habit of referring to Sue-Bizen swords without personal names as "mass-produced" and of lower quality. However, it should be noted that these were not crudely mass-produced. Many unsigned works are of surprisingly high quality, and some are so well made that they can be attributed to specific smiths.
This sword has been significantly shortened and is now unsigned, but the quality of the forging and tempering suggests it was originally signed. The well-forged mokume hada shows a prominent grain, with a hamon that includes both gunome and choji patterns. The high yakidashi extends above the shinogi, with frequent ashi and yo, and sunagashi running through the blade. The slightly extended kissaki gives it a sharp appearance, while the elegant forging typical of Sue-Bizen can be enjoyed. When purchased by our shop, it was covered in light rust, but has since undergone high-quality polishing for artistic appreciation, including traditional sashikomi polishing to highlight the gunome and choji patterns.
The accompanying Type 98 military sword koshirae has a few minor dents in the scabbard but is in good preservation condition, adding value as a military artifact. The serial number on the fittings shows a different stamp only on the tsuba (213), but there is no play in the tsuba. The slightly tilted hole in the seppa and the tsuba's nakago-ana match perfectly, suggesting it is original from the time of manufacture rather than a later restoration. This freshly polished Sue-Bizen sword would be a valuable addition to any collection.
Bare weight: 616 grams. Weight with koshirae: 941 grams.
