Description
Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Tomomitsu 友光 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate
The mokume hada is well-forged, with a prominent grain and a subtle utsuri. The hamon is bright and clear, with a moist appearance, featuring kinsuji and small ashi. The boshi is straight on both sides, ending in a short, flame-like kaen style with nie lines biting into the blade.
The blade has been significantly shortened (suriage) and was originally an orikaeshi-mei (folded signature), but further shortening has removed the folded part, leaving the signature at the tang (nakago) resembling a gaku-mei (framed signature). There are four nicks on the back ridge (mune).
The appraisal by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai indicates that the smith is unknown (kuni fumei) and dates it broadly to the Muromachi period. However, in my opinion, it is from the early to mid-Muromachi period. The fact that it was preserved with an orikaeshi-mei to retain the signature suggests it was highly valued over time.
Bare weight: 597 grams.
