Description
Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Chikugo no kami Kunifusa 筑後守國房 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate
Although the body style suggests it was made by the second-generation 國房 (Kunifusa) active around the Kanbun period, the commentary from the Japanese Sword Preservation Association states it is from the mid-Edo period. Upon inquiry, it was clarified that due to a lack of definitive generational records and the absence of dated works, pieces attributed to Iyo 國房 (Kunifusa) broadly fall under the mid-Edo period. In my view, given the typical Kanbun Shinto style, it is likely from the second generation, or possibly the third if considering a later period.
Regardless, existing works by successive generations of 國房 (Kunifusa) are very rare, making this a valuable cultural artifact from Ehime Prefecture.
This sword has a wide difference in width from base to tip, shallow curvature, and a medium-length tip. The typical Kanbun Shinto style reflects an emphasis on cutting power, maneuverability, and practicality. The steel has a well-forged mix of small itame and mokume grains with a slightly raised texture and chikei. The hamon is a bright and clear suguha with very shallow, small undulations and well-defined peaks. The boshi is straight with a rounded tip, extending to the yokote. It is well-balanced with a center of gravity towards the handle, and in excellent polish. We recommend submitting it for a Tokubetsu Hozon (Special Preservation Sword) certificate.
Bare weight: 651 grams.
