Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Hizen Karatsu ju Masatsugu 肥前唐津住正次 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate

Real name: 田口喜一 (Taguchi Kiichi). Born on July 28, 明治37年 (1904). Resided in 八幡町, 唐津市, 佐賀県 (Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture). His family were traditional swordsmiths for the 唐津藩 (Karatsu Domain) for generations. From around 昭和10年 (1935), he studied the forging techniques of 水心子正秀 (Mizokoshi Masahide) with his father. Later, he became a disciple of 栗原昭秀 (Kurihara Akihide).

In 昭和14年 and 15年 (1939-1940), he exhibited at the 5th Japanese Sword Exhibition, receiving the Gold Medal and the Navy Minister's Award. In 昭和16年 (1941), he was appointed as an Army Commissioned Swordsmith and won the Gold Award at the Army Sword Technique Encouragement Society. After the war, he continued forging swords and received various awards such as the Effort Award and the Encouragement Award, establishing his reputation as a distinguished swordsmith of the 昭和 (Showa) era.

From 昭和33年 to 38年 (1958-1963), he exhibited at the Sword Forging Technique Presentation and received awards such as the Encouragement Award and the Effort Award. He had a disciple named 忠孝刀匠 (Tadataka Toshō). Even after the war, he continued to forge swords and received various awards such as the Effort Award and the Encouragement Award, earning a distinguished reputation in the 昭和 era.

This sword has a well-proportioned width difference between the base and tip, with an extended tip. The steel is well-forged with a tight grain pattern, showing beautiful ji-nie and chikei. The hamon is bright and clear with a suguha pattern, featuring small ashi, forming a ko-choji midare. The blade exhibits ha and kinsuji, with the boshi being straight on the omote side with some irregularities and an upward thrust, and slightly irregular on the ura side, ending in a round tip, both sides extending down to the yokote.

Though not highly noticeable to the naked eye, the photos show a slight white sheen on the omote side due to polishing marks from maintenance. This is a well-forged piece with many highlights, offered at an affordable price to allow enjoyment through either touch-up or re-polishing.

Bare weight: 795 grams.
