Description
The Black Wave Katana is a completed customer sword build centered around a dark, understated koshirae and a traditionally folded modern steel blade. Rather than relying on bright colours or highly contrasting decorations, this build develops its character through layered steel, flowing details, black textures, and restrained brass accents.
The polished blade immediately draws attention to its visible hada. Created through the folding and forging process, the fine layered pattern can be seen running through the surface of the steel, becoming particularly noticeable around the lower portion of the blade near the habaki. Under changing light, these layers give the blade a sense of depth that contrasts beautifully with the predominantly black mounting.
The blade is also clay tempered, producing a genuine clay-tempered hamon along the cutting edge. Instead of treating the blade surface as a single visual feature, this combination allows both the hada and hamon to contribute their own character—the hada revealing the layered construction of the steel, while the hamon traces the result of the differential heat treatment.
Wave-Themed Koshirae
The wave theme is concentrated around the cast-brass tsuba, where the flowing openwork design introduces movement into an otherwise restrained mounting. Matching cast-brass fuchi-kashira continue the detailing around the handle, while the brass seppa and habaki add warm metallic accents between the black tsuka and polished blade.
Keeping the wave motif focused around the fittings prevents the theme from becoming overly decorative. From a distance, the katana remains predominantly black; viewed more closely, the individual details begin to emerge.
Traditional Tsuka Details
The tsuka continues the dark visual direction with Japanese-made genuine silk tsuka-ito wrapped over fully wrapped genuine rayskin. Emperor nodes remain visible beneath the alternating openings of the wrap, providing a natural textural contrast against the black ito.
Hishigami are used in the tsukamaki, helping create more defined and consistent diamond-shaped openings along the handle. Small metallic details visible between the wrap add another layer of contrast without interrupting the overall black presentation.
Together with the wave-themed tsuba, these details make the handle visually interesting at close range while preserving the restrained character of the complete sword.
A Black Saya That Changes with the Light
One of the most distinctive elements of this customer build is its black sparkling lacquer saya with buffalo-horn fittings.
Seen directly from the side, the saya initially appears deep and understated. From an angle, however, the surface reveals a much stronger repeating striped effect. Light catches the raised visual rhythm differently across the curved saya, producing alternating dark and reflective bands along its length.
This subtle texture is especially effective because it does not compete with the blade. When the katana is sheathed, the striped black saya becomes one of the main visual features; once the blade is drawn, attention shifts naturally toward the visible hada and hamon.
A Japanese rayon kakucho sageo completes the saya in black, maintaining the monochromatic character of the mounting.
