Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Chiyozuru 千代鶴 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate
The Echizen Chiyozuru school is said to have been founded by Chiyozuru Kuniyasu, a pupil of Rai Kuniyasu, and hence this school is also referred to as Echizen Rai. It began in the Jōji period of the Nanbokuchō era and flourished into the early Muromachi period. Notable smiths include Morihiro during the Ōei period and Morifusa around the Meiō period. The auspicious name "Chiyozuru" was highly esteemed and popular for celebratory occasions such as birthdays and weddings.
This sword was discovered with a rusted blade and has undergone complete restoration at our shop. The beautiful shape with a noticeable difference in width between the base and the tip features a shallow curvature. It is presumed that the curvature was lowered along with the nakago (tang) in later periods to make it more suitable for cutting, resulting in some bending along the mune (back ridge). However, the elegant style typical of the Rai school, with a bright and refined nioiguchi, makes this flaw negligible. Personally, I believe the original appearance might date back slightly earlier than the Chiyozuru period.
Please enjoy the freshly polished, brilliantly sharp blade of this ancient Rai school sword, finished for art appreciation.
Bare weight: 832 grams.
