Description
Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Seki ju Kanekado 関住兼門 NBTHK TOKUBETSU HOZON TOKEN Certificate
In the swordsmith directory, there are four swordsmiths named 兼門 (Kanemoto) seen during the 新刀期 (Shinto period). This sword appears to be a work from around the 寛文 (Kanbun) era.
The tightly forged 地鉄 (jigane) is dense and exquisite, and one cannot help but be amazed at the impeccable forging without a single small flaw. The 刃文 (hamon) is a bright gunome-midare, with rounded yakigashira, and its low height difference gives it an elegant appearance. Fine sunagashi can be seen along the blade's edge, and the 帽子 (boshi) is slightly midare on the front and straight with a slightly round return on the back.
Though it has an old polish, both the foundation and finishing are well done, giving the sword a dignified appearance, allowing for a pleasant and refreshing appreciation of the steel and blade. The balance is exceptionally good with the center of gravity towards the hand, making it feel very light when held. Swords with shorter blade lengths like this one were often commissioned by higher-ranking samurai, and many excellent pieces have been preserved.
Additionally, the blade fits beautifully into a ready-made 鞘 (saya), allowing for the affordable production of a 拵 (koshirae). If desired, please feel free to contact us.
Bare weight: 665 grams.
