Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Araki Kiyoshigei 荒木清重 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate
Araki Kiyoshige is said to have been a disciple of Minamoto Kiyomaro, a highly reputed swordsmith from Yotsuya Masamune. Later, he received the title of Settsu no Kami and served as an official swordsmith in Sunpu Province (Shizuoka Prefecture), eventually moving to Kozuke Province (Gunma Prefecture). His gravestone reads, "Gunma Prefecture, Samurai Swordsmith, Prominent Disciple of Minamoto Kiyomaro, Araki Settsu no Kami Minamoto Kiyoshige," but based on the era and style, it is believed his direct teacher was Kiyoto, a prominent disciple of Kiyomaro. He passed away at the age of 80 on July 15, Taisho 8 (1919).
This sword features a well-proportioned width from the base to the tip, with a slightly thick and powerful construction. The jihada is a well-forged ko-itame mixed with masame, with ji-nie and chikei, and a slightly pronounced grain. The hamon is a bright and clear gunome midare with ashi, long ashi extending towards the edge, sunagashi, kinsuji, and inazuma. The boshi is straight with a rounded return on both sides.
* There is a section near the yokote on the fukura where the edge is slightly serrated, but it is hardly noticeable.
While swords by Kiyomaro are highly renowned and expensive, this excellent piece from one of his prominent disciples is within reach. Do not miss the opportunity to acquire a masterpiece from the renowned Yotsuya Masamune lineage.
Bare weight: 970 grams.
