Description
Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Seisosai Muneari 精壮斎宗有 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate
Sōyū was a student of the renowned master Sōji Koyama during the Shin-Shinto period, and was known by the name Suzuki Jirō. Born in Mutsu Province, Hachinohe, he initially signed his works as Sōkyū. In the late Edo period, around the Bunkyū era, he was active in Hachinohe, a branch domain of the Nambu clan's Morioka Domain with 20,000 koku, where he served as an official swordsmith. Sōyū gained fame for his excellent cutting ability, and some of his works bear cutting test inscriptions.
This sword has a robust blade width and thickness, with a well-forged and dense jigane (steel surface) featuring thick ji-nie, resulting in a plain appearance. The elongated kissaki (tip) gives it a grand and imposing look. It is flawless, with a bright and clear jigane and ha (edge), making it a superb work that can be praised as one of Sōyū's outstanding creations. Although it is unfortunate that it is unsigned, the accompanying koshirae is elegant and in excellent condition, making it an exceptional piece for both art appreciation and collection.
Bare weight: 866 grams.
Weight with koshirae: 1,119 grams.
