Description
Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Takada Tokiyuki 高田時行 NBTHK TOKUBETSU HOZON TOKEN Certificate
A greatly shortened unsigned sword determined to be the work of 豊後国 (Bungo Province) smith 高田時行 (Takada Tokiyuki). Tokiyuki was active during the middle of the 南北朝時代 (Nanbokucho period), around the Ōan era. He is said to be the son of 友行 (Tomoyuki), the founder of the Takada school in Bungo, and is also considered a disciple of 左文字 (Sadamune). Tokiyuki is one of the representative swordsmiths of old Kyushu, with one of his tachi being designated a National Treasure and one of his tanto being designated an Important Cultural Property.
This sword has a shallow curvature and an extended tip, giving it a magnificent appearance. The steel features an itame pattern mixed with mokume, with some raised grain and ji-nie, and the presence of chikei. It also exhibits shirake utsuri. The hamon is predominantly suguha with some undulations and small gunome, incorporating small midare and ashi, with visible sunagashi. The boshi is suguha, slightly undulating on both sides, with a rounded return, showing the typical robust style of the Nanbokucho period.
Although the sword can be appreciated in its current state, it is in an old polish. Those with the means may want to consider a touch-up polish to fully appreciate the intricate details of the steel and hamon.
Bare weight: 794 grams.
