Description
Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Esshu Tsuruga ju Fujiwara Shimousa no kami Muneyoshi 越州敦賀住藤原下総守宗吉 NBTHK TOKUBETSU HOZON TOKEN Certificate
宗吉 (Muneyoshi) was a swordsmith from 敦賀 (Tsuruga) in 越前国 (Echizen Province) around the Keichō era. According to the "Nihontō Meikan," there were swordsmiths like Muneyoshi who lived in Tsuruga during the Eikyō and Daiei eras. After the Keichō era Muneyoshi, there was a swordsmith named 藤原宗吉 (Fujiwara Muneyoshi) (Echigo no kami) from Tsuruga during the Shōhō era.
This sword does not have a pronounced width difference between the base and the tip, and the extended tip reflects the characteristics of the Keichō Shintō style well. It has a regular width and thickness with a high shinogi, giving it a robust and powerful appearance. The steel is well-forged itame with chikei and a textured surface. The hamon is a suguha with small nie, interspersed with a gentle wavy pattern, showing kinsuji and sunagashi. The boshi is straight with a rounded return.
Although the tang (nakago) is ubu, its spine has been filed down to reduce the tang’s curvature, a modification often seen in older works. Ideally, a completely ubu nakago is preferable, but this level of alteration is not considered a significant flaw.
This sword proudly showcases the powerful appearance of the Keichō Shintō style, making it an excellent study material for understanding the changes in sword shapes during this period. It is a valuable piece for those researching Keichō Shintō swords.
Bare weight: 772 grams.
