Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Miyoshi Izu no kami Minamoto Naokuni 三好伊豆守源直國  NBTHK TOKUBETSU HOZON TŌKEN Certificate

直國 (Naokuni) was a swordsmith who studied under 助直 (Sukenao) and was a grand-disciple of the famous craftsman 助廣 (Sukehira). According to sword records, he seems to have been active around the 享保 (Kyōhō) period, and judging by the date on this piece, he appears to have lived a very long life.

This sword features a shinogi-zukuri shape with an iori-mune, and the difference between the base and tip is not noticeable. It has a powerful extended chu-kissaki, with a narrow shinogi-width, indicating ease of extraction during cutting. The steel shows a mix of small itame and mokume with some masame flowing in places, revealing large grain spots in certain areas. The hamon is a gentle undulating pattern with small nie as the base, interspersed with ashi, kinsugi, and sunagashi. As it progresses towards the tip, the nioiguchi tightens, featuring pointed gunome, and the boshi is straight with a round end on the omote and an o-maru on the ura, giving a yakitsume appearance. The tang's finish and signature style are reminiscent of his grandmaster 助廣 (Sukehira) and master 助直 (Sukenao).

The accompanying koshirae features shakudo fittings for the koiguchi, kurigata, and kojiri, and the tsuka has a robust square-shaped onigawara pattern. The iron plate tsuba is engraved with a statue of Nio, reflecting the ownership by a warrior of rugged disposition.

Bare weight: 709 grams.
Weight with koshirae and without scabbard: 1,074 grams.

※There is a small nick on the fukura of the kissaki. If you are interested, you can choose a partial polishing, but this part of the service will be charged extra.
