Description
Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Hoki no kami Nobutaka 伯耆守信高 NBTHK HOZON TŌKEN Certificate
In 尾張 (Owari), the renowned 伯耆守信高 (Hoki no kami Nobutaka) was a swordsmith from the 美濃三阿弥 (Mino Sanami) school. He moved to Owari in the 15th year of Keicho and served as the official swordsmith for the Owari Tokugawa family, thriving until the end of the Edo period. Nobutaka, along with other Mino swordsmiths who moved to Owari such as 兼常 (Kane Tsune) and 氏房 (Ujifusa), were collectively referred to as the 尾張関 (Owari Seki) and Nobutaka served as their representative.
This sword, having been shortened, has lost the part below the "藤" (Fuji) in the signature. Additionally, since the signatures of the successive generations of Nobutaka are very similar, it is difficult to determine the exact generation. However, judging by the shallow curvature, it is likely from the second or third generation. Despite being shortened, the difference between the base and tip is notable, and it has the typical Kanbun Shinto style with a medium kissaki. The steel has a well-forged, tight mokume hada with masame lines visible on both the edge and spine, characteristic of the Mino tradition. The hamon is a tightly nioi-based suguha with slight ko-midare near the monouchi, occasional larger nie clusters, and frequent mouse-like ashi. Though it appears to be a simple suguha at first glance, closer inspection reveals fine changes along the blade edge, and the boshi is straight with a rounded return.
Bare weight: 734 grams.
