Description
Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Choshu ju Nio Naokiyo 長州住二王直清 NBTHK TOKUBETSU HOZON TŌKEN Certificate
This is a signed and dated work by 清重 (Kiyoshige), an official swordsmith of the Choshu domain who was active in the 長門国 (Nagato Province, present-day Yamaguchi Prefecture) during the late Edo period. 直清 (Naokiyo), whose common name was 玉井長蔵 (Tamai Chozō), was a late member of the Nio school and studied under 大慶直胤 (Taikei Naotane).
This sword has a shallow curvature with a well-balanced difference between the base and tip. The extended, powerful boshi (帽子) complements the overall form. The steel has a densely forged 小板目肌 (ko-itame hada) with fine chikei and thick ji-nie, reminiscent of the small grain texture of Hizen swords. The hamon (刃文) is a bright, clear juzu-ba style gunome-midare with occasional tall gunome, featuring frequent ashi and fine sunagashi in the blade. The jihada shows tobiyaki, and the boshi is straight with a rounded return on both sides. It is a masterpiece that demonstrates Naokiyo's high level of skill without any notable flaws or defects.
Bare weight: 1,008 grams.
