Dōsetsu is named in honour of Tachibana Dōsetsu (立花道雪, 1513–1585), the renowned Sengoku-period warrior and commander who served the Ōtomo clan. Remembered for his formidable courage, military discipline, and unwavering loyalty, Dōsetsu became one of Kyushu’s most respected samurai leaders. He is also closely associated with the legendary sword Raikiri, or “Lightning Cutter,” reinforcing his enduring image as a warrior of extraordinary strength and resolve. This katana bears his name as a tribute to his fearless spirit, steadfast character, and commanding presence.
The blade is crafted from 9260 spring steel and professionally vacuum heat-treated to achieve an excellent balance of toughness, flexibility, and impact resistance. The carefully controlled heat-treatment process promotes consistent mechanical performance while minimising surface oxidation and decarburisation. Combined with its full-tang construction, the resilient spring-steel blade gives Dōsetsu the structural reliability required for martial arts practice and practical cutting applications.
Finished with a Premium Mirror Polish, the blade presents a smooth, highly reflective surface that highlights its clean lines and precise geometry. The point is formed with an authentic kissaki structure, rather than a simplified cosmetic tip, creating a clearly defined transition into the kissaki and giving the blade a more traditional Japanese sword profile.
The koshirae is centred around a Mokkō-gata brass tsuba adorned with blooming sakura motifs. Its elegant four-lobed form provides a balanced and traditional silhouette, while the sculpted cherry blossoms represent beauty, renewal, and the fleeting nature of life. Their delicate appearance creates a refined contrast with the strength and resilience of the vacuum heat-treated 9260 spring-steel blade.
The fuchi and kashira are crafted from white copper cupronickel and feature the traditional Sakura Ishime design. The finely textured stone-like surface is accented with cherry blossom details, bringing depth and understated elegance to the mounting while maintaining a cohesive visual relationship with the floral tsuba.
The tsuka is tightly wrapped in black cotton ito over genuine white samegawa, creating a timeless black-and-white contrast while providing a secure and comfortable grip. The mounting is completed with a Red Ishime saya, whose refined stone-textured lacquer adds warmth and visual intensity while helping conceal minor handling marks. A matching black sageo completes the composition, giving Dōsetsu a dignified appearance that balances martial strength with the graceful symbolism of blooming sakura.
