Kanbei katana is named in honor of Kuroda Kanbei (Kuroda Yoshitaka, 1546–1604), one of the most brilliant strategists of Japan's Sengoku period. Renowned for his exceptional military insight, wisdom, and unwavering loyalty, Kanbei played a pivotal role in the rise of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and became one of the era's most respected military advisors. Bearing his name, this katana reflects the balance of strength, discipline, and enduring samurai spirit.
Forged from T10 high-carbon steel in traditional Maru-zukuri construction, the blade offers outstanding durability and dependable cutting performance. Through traditional clay tempering, it develops a bold Sanbonsugi hamon—the iconic three-peaked temper line of the Mino tradition, admired for its crisp rhythm and dynamic appearance. Finished in an authentic sashikomi polish, the blade faithfully preserves the natural beauty of the hardened edge while revealing the genuine hamon with understated elegance.
The koshirae is centered around a round brass tsuba intricately carved with a powerful tiger motif. Long regarded as a symbol of courage, determination, and authority, the tiger gives the mounting a bold yet refined character. The fuchi and kashira, crafted from white copper (cupronickel), feature the traditional Higo Yamamichi pattern, inspired by the winding mountain paths of Higo Province and symbolizing perseverance and resilience. A polished brass habaki completes the mounting with a precise and harmonious fit.
The tsuka is wrapped in black cotton ito over genuine black samegawa, creating a unified monochromatic appearance while providing a secure and comfortable grip. The saya is finished in a traditional Black Ishime lacquer, whose finely textured stone-like surface offers understated elegance and excellent durability. A matching black sageo completes the koshirae, reinforcing the sword's restrained and balanced aesthetic.
