Kanetsugu is a katana from the Huo Series, distinguished by its harmonious balance of refined craftsmanship and understated strength. Forged from T10 high-carbon steel in traditional Maru-zukuri construction, the blade offers excellent resilience, clean geometry, and dependable cutting performance. Clay tempered using traditional methods, it reveals a graceful Notare hamon—a gently undulating temper line whose flowing rhythm evokes the movement of calm water. Finished in a traditional sashikomi polish, the blade retains a natural appearance that allows the authentic activity of the hardened edge to emerge with quiet elegance rather than exaggerated contrast.
The koshirae is centered around a Mokkō-gata brass tsuba intricately decorated with densely layered floral carvings. The warm golden tone of the brass complements the organic motifs, creating an impression of seasonal abundance while preserving the classic silhouette of traditional Japanese sword furniture. The fuchi and kashira, crafted from white copper (cupronickel), feature finely engraved Karakusa (arabesque) scrollwork, a timeless symbol of continuity, prosperity, and enduring craftsmanship. A polished brass habaki completes the mounting, securing the blade with precision while harmonizing with the tsuba's warm metallic character.
The tsuka is wrapped in deep brown cotton ito over genuine black samegawa, producing a rich tonal contrast that is both refined and practical. The darker rayskin subtly enhances the warmth of the brown wrapping while providing a secure, tactile grip during handling. The saya is finished in a gloss black lacquer, offering a clean, mirror-like surface that contrasts elegantly with the earth-toned tsuka. A matching deep brown sageo completes the mounting, unifying the overall color palette with quiet sophistication.
Kanetsugu is a katana that favors flowing lines over dramatic ornamentation. From its softly rolling Notare hamon to its floral brass tsuba and restrained earth-toned mountings, every element is composed to express balance, continuity, and traditional refinement. It is an ideal choice for practitioners and collectors seeking a sword that embodies classical Japanese aesthetics with enduring craftsmanship and timeless elegance.
