Kanetsugu katana is named in honor of Naoe Kanetsugu (1560–1619), the legendary chief retainer of the Uesugi clan during Japan's Sengoku period. Revered for his wisdom, unwavering loyalty, and strong sense of justice, Kanetsugu became one of the most respected statesmen and military strategists of his era. Bearing his name, this katana pays tribute to his legacy through a design that embodies discipline, refinement, and enduring samurai spirit.
Forged from T10 high-carbon steel in traditional Maru-zukuri construction, the blade offers excellent resilience and dependable cutting performance. Through traditional clay tempering, it develops a graceful Notare hamon, whose gently undulating temper line flows naturally along the edge with quiet elegance. Finished in an authentic sashikomi polish, the blade faithfully preserves the natural beauty of the hardened edge while revealing the genuine hamon with subtle depth and traditional character.
The koshirae is centered around a Mokkō-gata brass tsuba intricately decorated with layered floral carvings. The fuchi and kashira, crafted from white copper (cupronickel), feature finely engraved Karakusa scrollwork, a traditional motif symbolizing continuity, prosperity, and enduring craftsmanship. A polished brass habaki completes the mounting, harmonizing beautifully with the warm tones of the tsuba.
The tsuka is wrapped in deep brown cotton ito over genuine black samegawa, creating a refined contrast while providing a secure and comfortable grip. The saya is finished in a Gloss Black Lacquer, whose smooth mirror-like surface complements the warm earth tones of the tsuka with understated elegance. A matching deep brown sageo completes the koshirae, reinforcing the sword's balanced and timeless aesthetic.
