Katsuie is a katana from the Huo Series, crafted for practitioners and collectors who appreciate the balance between traditional aesthetics and practical performance. Forged from T10 high-carbon steel in classic Maru-zukuri construction, the blade delivers excellent edge retention, durability, and responsive handling. Traditional clay tempering produces a graceful Real Notare hamon, its gentle undulating temper line flowing naturally along the edge like calm waves. Finished in an authentic sashikomi polish, the blade preserves the natural beauty of the hardened steel, allowing the genuine hamon to reveal itself with subtle depth rather than artificial enhancement. Built with a tight-fitted tsuka core and a well-balanced Niku geometry, Katsuie is designed to provide dependable structural integrity and confident cutting performance for regular tameshigiri practice.
The koshirae is centered around a black iron sukashi tsuba featuring an elegant composition of flowing water and cherry blossoms. The openwork design captures the harmony between moving water and falling sakura, symbolizing the fleeting nature of life balanced by the enduring flow of time. Crafted from blackened white copper (patinated cupronickel), the fuchi and kashira are decorated with delicate vine motifs, representing continuous growth, resilience, and lasting prosperity. Their understated finish complements the dark iron tsuba, creating a cohesive mounting rooted in classical Japanese sword aesthetics. A brass habaki provides a precise fit while introducing a subtle warm accent to the otherwise restrained color palette.
The tsuka is wrapped in deep blue cotton ito over genuine white samegawa, producing a refined contrast that recalls the deep blue of evening skies against fresh white stone. The secure wrap offers a comfortable and confident grip while enhancing the sword's elegant appearance. The saya is finished in a traditional Black Ishime lacquer, its finely textured stone-like surface adding quiet sophistication and durability. A matching deep blue sageo completes the koshirae, harmonizing beautifully with the tsuka while reinforcing the sword's calm and balanced character.
Katsuie is a katana that favors refinement over extravagance. From the naturally flowing Real Notare hamon to the graceful sakura-and-water tsuba, the understated vine-pattern fittings, and the practical construction designed for cutting practice, every element reflects a commitment to traditional craftsmanship, functional performance, and timeless Japanese aesthetics. It is a sword equally suited for dedicated practitioners and discerning collectors who value authenticity, balance, and enduring quality.
