Masanori is a katana from the Huo Series, designed to embody the commanding presence and refined discipline of the classical samurai. Forged from T10 high-carbon steel in traditional Maru-zukuri construction, the blade offers exceptional durability, balanced handling, and dependable cutting performance. Clay tempered using traditional methods, it reveals a bold Sanbonsugi hamon—the iconic three-peaked temper line of the Mino tradition, celebrated for its crisp rhythm and dynamic visual character. Finished in a refined sashikomi polish, the blade preserves the authentic beauty of the hardened edge, allowing the natural activity of the hamon to emerge with subtle depth and traditional elegance.
The koshirae is centered around a Kiku-gata brass tsuba featuring a finely sculpted dragon motif. The chrysanthemum-shaped guard symbolizes nobility, longevity, and classical Japanese refinement, while the dragon represents wisdom, strength, and celestial authority. Together, these elements create a harmonious balance between imperial elegance and martial spirit. The warm brass finish accentuates the intricate carving, giving the tsuba both visual depth and timeless character. The fuchi and kashira, crafted from white copper (cupronickel), feature the traditional Kyō Ajiro pattern, inspired by the refined woven bamboo craftsmanship of Kyoto. Its orderly geometric texture reflects precision, harmony, and understated sophistication. A polished brass habaki completes the mounting, ensuring a secure fit while complementing the warm tones of the tsuba.
The tsuka is wrapped in deep brown cotton ito over genuine black samegawa, creating a rich contrast that blends warmth with restraint. The secure wrap provides a comfortable and confident grip while enhancing the sword's refined aesthetic. The saya is finished in a striking Black Red-Speckled Lacquer, where a deep black lacquer base is scattered with vivid crimson speckles that shimmer subtly under changing light. Inspired by traditional Japanese lacquer techniques, this finish evokes glowing embers against a dark night, adding quiet energy without overwhelming the sword's classical character. A gold sageo completes the koshirae, bringing warmth and visual balance to the overall mounting.
Masanori is a katana that unites traditional symbolism with disciplined craftsmanship. From the sharply defined Sanbonsugi hamon to the dragon-adorned Kiku-gata tsuba, the elegant Kyō Ajiro fittings, and the distinctive Black Red-Speckled Saya, every element has been carefully selected to express strength, refinement, and enduring Japanese artistry. Whether appreciated in practice or displayed as a collector's piece, Masanori stands as a timeless expression of martial tradition and masterful craftsmanship.
