Masashige katana is named in honor of Kusunoki Masashige (1294–1336), one of Japan's most revered samurai and a lasting symbol of loyalty and selfless devotion. Celebrated for his unwavering faithfulness to Emperor Go-Daigo and his willingness to sacrifice himself for his principles, Masashige has long been regarded as the embodiment of the samurai ideal. Bearing his name, this katana pays tribute to his enduring legacy through a design that reflects dignity, resilience, and traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
Forged from T10 high-carbon steel, the blade offers excellent durability and dependable cutting performance. Through traditional clay tempering, it develops a graceful Real Notare hamon, whose gentle undulating temper line flows naturally along the edge with quiet elegance. The genuine hamon is allowed to emerge naturally, highlighting the beauty of traditional Japanese differential hardening and the refined character of the blade.
The koshirae is centered around a round black iron tsuba featuring delicate sakura openwork. The cherry blossom motif symbolizes the fleeting beauty of life and the enduring spirit of the samurai. The fuchi and kashira, crafted from white copper (cupronickel), feature the traditional Karakusa pattern, whose flowing arabesque vines represent continuity, prosperity, and enduring good fortune.
The tsuka is wrapped in brown cotton ito over genuine white samegawa, providing a secure and comfortable grip while creating a warm, natural contrast. The saya is finished in a traditional Brown Ishime lacquer, whose stone-textured surface reflects the understated beauty of natural wood and earth. A matching brown sageo completes the koshirae, creating a harmonious and timeless appearance.
