Motochika katana is named in honor of Chōsokabe Motochika (1539–1599), the renowned daimyō who unified Shikoku during Japan's Sengoku period. Celebrated for his strategic brilliance, disciplined leadership, and military achievements, Motochika remains a symbol of wisdom, resilience, and martial excellence. This katana bears his name as a tribute to his enduring legacy through traditional craftsmanship and functional performance.
Hand-forged from T10 high-carbon steel in traditional Maru-zukuri construction, the blade is clay tempered to produce a striking Real Hitatsura hamon, where hardened patterns extend dramatically across the blade surface. Finished in an authentic sashikomi polish, the blade naturally highlights the genuine hamon while preserving the classical beauty of Japanese sword polishing. Combined with a traditional full-tang construction, authentic kissaki geometry, and a tight-fitted tsuka core, Motochika delivers excellent balance and dependable cutting performance.
The koshirae is centered around a blackened iron tsuba featuring an openwork wheel motif, symbolizing continuity, movement, and the ever-turning cycle of fortune. The fuchi and kashira, crafted from white copper (cupronickel), feature the classic Jūji Kikkō pattern, representing longevity, resilience, and enduring good fortune.
The tsuka is wrapped in black cotton ito over genuine white samegawa, creating a timeless black-and-white contrast while providing a secure and comfortable grip. The saya is finished in a distinctive White Speckled Lacquer, offering a refined stone-like appearance that complements the dark fittings. A matching black sageo completes the koshirae, reinforcing the sword's balanced and disciplined character.
