Motonari katana is named in honor of Mōri Motonari (1497–1571), one of the greatest daimyō and military strategists of Japan's Sengoku period. Renowned for his wisdom, patience, and exceptional leadership, Motonari transformed the Mōri clan into one of western Japan's most powerful forces. Bearing his name, this katana pays tribute to his enduring legacy through a design that reflects resilience, discipline, and traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
Forged from T10 high-carbon steel, the blade combines excellent edge retention with the resilience required of a functional Japanese sword. Through traditional clay tempering, it develops a graceful Real Notare hamon, whose gentle undulating temper line flows naturally along the edge like rolling waves. The differential hardening process creates a hard cutting edge while maintaining a resilient spine, reflecting the practical character of a traditionally forged blade.
The koshirae is centered around a blackened iron Mokkō-gata tsuba featuring openwork axe motifs. The axe design symbolizes strength, determination, and martial valor, giving the sword a bold yet understated appearance. The fuchi and kashira, crafted from white copper (cupronickel), feature a subtle Wood Grain texture that recalls the natural beauty of timber while adding quiet refinement to the mounting.
The tsuka is wrapped in black cotton ito over genuine white samegawa, creating a timeless black-and-white contrast while providing a secure and comfortable grip. The saya is finished in a striking Red Ishime lacquer, whose stone-textured surface combines rich color with understated elegance. A matching black sageo completes the koshirae, balancing the vivid red saya with the restrained black mountings.
