Shōun is named in honour of Takahashi Shōun (高橋紹運, 1548–1586), the renowned Sengoku-period warrior and senior retainer of the Ōtomo clan. Celebrated for his loyalty, courage, and disciplined leadership, Shōun is best remembered for his final defence of Iwaya Castle in 1586, where he and his greatly outnumbered forces resisted the advancing Shimazu army. His unwavering resolve and honourable character earned him lasting admiration as one of Kyushu’s most respected warriors. This katana bears his name as a tribute to his steadfast loyalty, fearless spirit, and determination in the face of overwhelming adversity.
The blade is crafted from 9260 spring steel and professionally vacuum heat-treated to achieve an excellent balance of toughness, flexibility, and impact resistance. The carefully controlled heat-treatment process promotes consistent mechanical performance while minimising surface oxidation and decarburisation. Combined with its full-tang construction, the resilient spring-steel blade gives Shōun the structural reliability required for martial arts practice and practical cutting applications.
Finished with a Premium Mirror Polish, the blade presents a smooth, highly reflective surface that highlights its clean lines and precise geometry. The point is formed with an authentic kissaki structure, rather than a simplified cosmetic tip, creating a clearly defined transition into the kissaki and giving the blade a more traditional Japanese sword profile.
The koshirae is centred around a black iron openwork tsuba featuring a crane motif. The elegant crane is traditionally associated with longevity, dignity, loyalty, and good fortune. Its graceful silhouette and finely arranged openwork create a refined visual contrast with the strength and resilience of the vacuum heat-treated 9260 spring-steel blade.
The fuchi and kashira are crafted from white copper cupronickel and feature a traditional Mokume wood-grain design. The flowing grain-like texture introduces a natural sense of movement and understated elegance, complementing the organic lines of the crane motif while adding visual depth to the mounting.
The tsuka is tightly wrapped in dark brown cotton ito over genuine white samegawa, creating a warm yet restrained contrast while providing a secure and comfortable grip. The mounting is completed with a distinctive white saya accented with fine black speckles, giving the sword a clean and refined appearance without appearing overly decorative. A matching dark brown sageo completes the composition, bringing visual harmony to Shōun and reinforcing its dignified balance of martial strength and quiet elegance.
